February 27, the day that the Pokemon Red and Green were first released in Japan, is Pokemon Day. For 2020's celebration, The Pokemon Company is promising a handful of events including the reveal of a brand-new Mythical Pokemon.
A new post on Pokemon's official Japanese website (via Google Translate) gives a brief rundown of what's coming on Pokemon Day for Sword and Shield, Pokemon Go, and Pokemon Masters. In addition to a special Max Raid battle in Sword and Shield, a new Mythical Pokemon that's also set to appear in Pokemon the Movie Coco (the anime series' first Sword and Shield-era movie) will be revealed.
It seems likely that we'll just get our first look at this new Mythical Pokemon on Pokemon Day, with whatever event it'll be available through coming closer to the next movie's release in Japan this summer. It's also possible that the new Mythic Pokemon could come in an event tied to the expansion passes for Sword and Shield, the first installment of which is set to launch in June.
Pokemon Go will celebrate the day with special in-game events, and players of Pokemon Masters—which has struggled since its release in August—will get new details on its developers' plans to improve the mobile title.
February 27 will also mark the English-language release of Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, a CGI retelling of the very first Pokemon movie. In the United States, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will be released via Netflix.
Whenever players do get a chance to capture this mysterious Mythical that we'll be meeting on Pokemon Day, you can bet that tons of people will get in on the action. Nintendo just revealed that Sword and Shield have already sold more than 16 million units, nearly toppling the lifetime sales of Sun and Moon and landing the games in the top-five best seller list for the Switch.
