Pokémon Masters Teased Sync Pair Is 24 Years in the Making

After 24 years, Pokémon trainers will finally have the opportunity to see Professor Oak in battle. The original Pokémon Professor, who introduced many to their first Pokémon adventures in the Kanto Region, will be joining Pokémon Masters as a new sync pair on February 14th.

In an English version of the teaser trailer that dropped last week in Japan, a man with Oak's iconic hairstyle and outfit is seen putting on a lab coat as he steps outside, presumably to join the player and other characters from the franchise in the mobile game. As he prepares to take on new challengers, he says, "After all this time absorbed in my research, it's time to relive the old days a little with some Pokémon battling."

This update marks the first time Professor Oak will available as either an ally or opponent in any Pokémon game, but it is far from the first time he's been considered for the part. In fact, there is evidence that he was once intended to be a powerful opponent in the original games, Pokémon Red and Green.

In the code for the original Generation I games, there is unused data for a battle against Professor Oak. The battle actually can be accessed through a glitch, revealing that Oak's team consists of Tauros, Exeggutor, Arcanine, Gyarados and the final evolved form of one of the starter Pokémon. Which team is fought depends on how the glitch is performed, but it was likely intended that Oak would have whichever starter the player and the rival did not choose at the start of the game.

Since this fight has never been officially revealed, it is not certain when it would have taken place, though this is also something fans can infer. His team's ranges from Level 66 to Level 70, beating out his grandson Blue's Champion battle team for the title of strongest team in the game. This means he could have been either a post-game challenge, an idea that would be revisited in Pokémon Gold and Silver with the battle against Red, or the original Champion himself since he shares four of his Pokémon with his Blue's final team.

As the trailer alludes to, the games have long teased Oak's past as a strong Pokémon trainer. Agatha of the Kanto Elite Four is said to be his childhood friend and rival, something that Pokémon Masters has actually expanded upon. In Agatha's Sync Pair Story, she reveals that Oak was friendly and always challenged her to battles to get out of her shell. Agatha could never defeat him, but kept battling him anyway and, eventually, the time spent together started to mean something to her. When Oak decided to stop battling and become a researcher instead, Agatha felt betrayed and stopped speaking to him. Since Masters focuses so much on developing the trainers of the long-running franchise, perhaps players will finally be able to see the two reunited in this game.

It's still not clear who Oak's partner Pokémon will be in Masters. Perhaps he'll have a member of his original team, or maybe a Venusaur to compliment Red's Charizard. Fans don't have long to wait for this series milestone, though, as Oak will be joining the game just in time for Valentine's Day.
